Tiger numbers have increased from just around 11-15 in 2012 to 44 adults by end of 2016. This is due to effective protection and habitat management in the period. Moreover the park boasts of wildlife well spread around leaving the tourist no boring moment during the safari. Another interesting sighting is that of the Malabar Pied Hornbill which is found in the forests near the Totladoh colony.

This is the same Pench jungle where Mowgli roamed with Bagheera and Baloo in the fables of the story teller Rudyard Kipling. Mr. Kipling never ever visited the jungles of Pench. He got the accounts of the forest through his various British friends in the survey departments. The jungle has been mentioned in India’s most revered epic ‘The Ramayana’. The epic mentions Rama spent most of his peaceful years of exile in this forest and the forests around here. In that era these jungles were known as Dandakaranya. The nearby hill of Ramtek has ancient Ram temple that stands today as a landform evidence of that epic. This same hill finds mention in the poetic epic ‘Meghadoota’ by Kalidasa.

The main tourist gate of Sillari is 66kms from Nagpur. The Khursapar gate easily accessible from Sillari Gate Maharashtra and Turia Gate Madhya Pradesh side is fast growing in importance and fame due to continuous tiger sightings. The gates of Nagalwadi & Kolitmara on the western side are the future prospects for a great jungle experience.
